File Server Transition Notice

Data User Registration and Login (Identity Management- IdM)

The NSF GAGE Facility, operated by EarthScope Consortium, is developing a data user registration and login system for access to our HTTPS Data File Server to better enable reporting our data archive usage to our sponsors.

Date to be determined, our new data file server, data.unavco.org, is being renamed to gage-data.earthscope.org, and the data.unavco.org server name will eventually be retired [date to be determined]. We will be providing a transition period, for users of data.unavco.org server to update their data access scripts to use the new server name, gage-data.earthscope.org, that was released on September 6, 2023. Simply updating URLs to our data file server in your code should complete your switchover from data.unavco.org to gage-data.earthscope.org. You can make your changes now. An announcement will be sent out to data-announcements@earthscope.org and earthscope-general@earthscope.org, so please subscribe to these groups to get important updates from EarthScope Data Services.

On May 31, 2023, our initial release server, data-idm.unavco.org, was retired. We provided a two month period, for users of our initial release data-idm.unavco.org server to transition their scripts and code to start using IdM with our main production data file server, data.unavco.org, that was released on March 30, 2023. Simply updating URLs in your code and logging out and logging in again to get new tokens via our CLI completes your switchover to data.unavco.org.

On March 30, 2023, based on feedback and updates to the system during the 2022-06 to 2023-03 transition period, identity management was put into production on our main production HTTPS Data File Server (data.unavco.org) per our announcements to the community. Our initial release server, data-idm.unavco.org, was retired on May 31, 2023. User registration and login became the only way to access our HTTPS Data File Server.

June 30, 2022: data-idm.unavco.org made available as an initial version of an identity management system (IdM), requiring user registration and login. It was available as an initial release for users to try until March 30, 2023 to facilitate transition to this new way of accessing data files. We welcomed your feedback during this transition period.

NOTES:

  • Our main production HTTPS Data File Server (data.unavco.org) will continue to operate without user registration and login during the 2022-06 to 2023-03 transition period.
  • See our file server access examples for information on using our new identity management system.
  • Please prepare accordingly and contact us with questions and concerns at data-help@earthscope.org.

FTP to HTTPS transition

The NSF GAGE Facility, operated by EarthScope Consortium, transitioned from FTP to HTTPS file serving for access to our data archive file system. The new HTTPS data file server became available starting June 1st, 2021. The FTP server was retired September 1st, 2022.

During this transition both FTP and HTTPS were supported and FTP continued to be available. Please note that on-going changes in best practice cybersecurity implementation may make FTP unusable to you or your institution before Sept. 2022. Most major browsers and operating systems have already removed pre-installed support for FTP and some even block its installation. We highly recommends you make these changes as quickly as possible to avoid any disruptions.

The new HTTPS server is located at https://gage-data.earthscope.org . Please start using it at your earliest convenience via a web browser and update your data access scripts to use it via cURL, Wget, etc.

Please note the new HTTPS server has a new file organization in order to accommodate more instrument types' data, the paths to data now start with the instrument type, e.g., /gnss, at the root level. Paths will change like so:

Old FTP URL New HTTPS URL
ftp://data-out.unavco.org/pub/
https://gage-data.earthscope.org/archive/gnss/

Subdirectory structures and filenames in the GNSS subdirectory will remain unchanged from the FTP server's layout.

See our HTTPS File Server Access Examples for examples on how to get files via the command line tools.
