Summary:
Precise GPS coordinates were provided to VXE-6 for the runway centerlines at the ice runway, Williams Field, and UPC. These were provided based on a request from VXE-6 Lieutenant Robert Mitalski, and were used to improve the GPS approach capabilities of the LC-130 aircraft. The ice runway survey was the first application of the real-time GPS system, which was at the time broadcasting from the Crary Lab. Limitations of this base location necessitated post-processing of the Williams Field data, which was done by the UNAVCO engineer.
