Summary:
UNAVCO performed a survey to measure surface displacements in Beacon Valley which occur due to sub-surface ice beneath the valley floor. This survey in December 2002 was an annual repeat of the initial survey from January 1999 and will reveal surface velocities as small as 1 centimeter/year. For the past two seasons, a second base at BV09 (near the instrumented crack) ran during the survey. A second base station contributes to smaller errors in the positions of the other marks. With a five-season time series, any movement of the valley floor will be apparent. Also, an 8-mark strain network was installed and surveyed near the lake at the head of Mullins Valley. Four geodetic receiver systems, field support, data processing, and data archiving were provided. TAMDEF survey mark BEA4 on University Peak was used for the reference receiver location. |
