Summary: The ANDRILL project moved its drill rig to the New Harbor region of McMurdo Sound to extend its sediment profiles of the Ross Sea floor. An ongoing challenge of the drilling operation is that the riser pipe is coupled with the sea ice, and thereby fluctuates with the tides. The installation of a GPS system allowed the tidal movement of the sea ice to be continuously monitored, providing feedback for the ANDRILL riser instrumentation. UNAVCO installed the GPS system at the drill site and set up automated data processing for daily updates. UNAVCO supported a remote GPS station at the Dailey Islands that was used to gather baseline geodetic data for the drilling project.
