Summary: Dr. Bindschadler traveled to the Pine Island Glacier region to set up instrumentation designed to monitor the motion and climate of the ice shelf region of the Pine Island Glacier (PIG). The five year study will focus on ice shelf dynamics and their interaction with ocean currents circulating beneath the shelf. The instrument packages consist of two UNAVCO autonomous GPS stations and a customized power and communications backbone (Figure 12) for an automated weather station. All three systems are designed operate year-round and are equipped with Iridium communications, plus wind and solar power.
