Intern Spotlight: Phillip Choi (RESESS)

Phillip Choi is a rising senior at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studies physics with a minor in geology—and a returning RESESS intern. Phillip enjoyed physics, but wanted to combine his theoretical knowledge with laboratory work. At the University of Pennsylvania, Phillip works in a sediment dynamics and geomorphology laboratory to investigate Earth surface processes from a granular physics perspective.

Intern Spotlight: Angelica (Angie) Bonanno (RESESS)

Angie Bonanno recently graduated from Bryn Mawr College where she received her bachelor’s degree in geology. In their freshman year, Angie wanted to switch out of a class after the add-drop period was over. Their dean offered to switch them into the introductory geology course.

Intern Spotlight: Elise Boucher (RESESS)

Elise Boucher currently attends Pitzer College in California and is double majoring in Geology and English. Her interest in geology began when she took an honors geology course in high school, with her interest in the subject stemming from the way geology covers a broad range of topics and explains natural phenomena at their most basic level.

New video: Supporting rockfall hazard studies in Zion

Zion Canyon’s beauty and scale wouldn’t be possible without countless rockfall events that hastened its carving. But now that human infrastructure exists in the park—carrying millions of visitors each year—rockfall presents a significant risk that has to be managed. UNAVCO recently supported a project assessing that risk in two locations in the park.
