Effective communication skills enable scientists to engage non-experts, inform public opinion and policymakers, inspire the next generation of scientists and voters, and improve our own research process. This short course and its three remote follow-on sessions take a hands-on approach to learning the tools of science communication, focusing on communication as a conversation. The skills practiced can be applied to all channels of communication, from a public lecture to a social media feed. These skills also improve teaching and networking.

The course draws on the Portal to the Public framework developed by the Pacific Science Center and other informal education partners, and also includes original materials developed by the instructors. The three remote sessions and associated homework are required for program completion; participants should expect to spend 3-5 hours per month on the follow-on portion of CSfI, which ends in June 2018. We understand schedules are busy and plan the remote sessions to have some flexibility.

This course is especially targeted toward graduate students and early career researchers, but is open to everyone attending the UNAVCO Science Workshop. No previous knowledge or experience with communicating science to the public is required. You will leave this workshop with personal goals for public outreach as well as a cohort of scientists similarly working to improve communication skills. For more information, contact Beth Bartel (
