Pre-course preparation
Dear Participants,
Thank you for registering for the 2018 Strainmeter Short Course. Talks and class documents will be loaded on to this page for your use during and after the class. We will be downloading and analyzing strainmeter data. To get the most out of the course it is recommended you bring a laptop with the software listed below installed. The class has been designed assuming attendees have Mac OS X or Linux machines. A Windows PC running a Linux environment would probably work too. UNAVCO may be able to make a laptop available to you for the class, but you need to let us know by Wednesday, March 21st 2018.
We will be using GMT5 to plot and view the data but any plotting software that can load a delimited ASCII text file could probably be used. Students are welcome to bring their preferred plotting software to test with strainmeter data. The BAYTAP-08 software will be used for tidal analysis and we encourage you to install it beforehand. The instructors are available to help with installation over the lunch break if assistance is needed. Most of the processing will be done with shell scripts, in addition we will be demonstrating how to analyze the data using R and the open source version of RStudio. Those interested in learning how to do this should install the software also before the class. The lists below outline the required software, useful documents links, and a suggested reading list.

- GMT5, for plotting the data, http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/projects/gmt/wiki/Installing
- Software to view the GMT plots, e.g., Ghost Script (http://ghostscript.com/download/). Mac users can install Ghost Script using macports (https://www.macports.org/) or use Preview, a built in application on a Mac.
- Baytap08 : Tidal Analysis Software: We will be using the BAYTAP08 software to analyze the tidal signals, estimate the barometric response and isolate strain signals. This software requires a Fortran complier. I will provide pre-compiled binaries for Mac and Linux users during the class. http://igppweb.ucsd.edu/~agnew/Baytap/baytap.html
- A text editor such as vi, emacs or brackets to edit scripts.
