The roving system is the GPS equipment that users take in the field. UNAVCO can provide a wide array of systems customized for each user's individual needs, however no inventory of roving systems is currently maintained at South Pole. Users should request such items prior to the field season.
An example roving system that can be requested from UNAVCO consists of a Trimble R7 receiver, Zephyr Geodetic antenna, and a hand-held data collector. An example of kinematic surveying near South Pole is mounting the roving receiver to a radar sled to precisely follow its path. Backpacks, range poles, and bipods are also available. These systems can also be configured for static work, including solar power systems and all necessary enclosures and cabling.
Pre-season training at UNAVCO is also strongly recommended.
