The PBO Nucleus Project, which will update and incorporate 209 existing GPS stations into the PBO network, is within a month of completion. This three-and-a-half year project accomplishes several important tasks for pre-PBO stations, including unifying equipment and data collection, making more data publicly available through UNAVCO’s centralized management, and extending the length of PBO time series as far back as 1991. Upgrading of existing stations included everything from re-monumenting, replacing receivers, and updating enclosures, antennas, and power systems. Permits and metadata were also transferred to UNAVCO. The nucleus stations have recorded several important recent events including GPS detection of Episodic Tremor and Slip in the Cascadia region, the magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Wells, NV on February 21, 2008 and the magnitude 5.4 earthquake near Chino Hills, CA on July 29, 2008.
