Parkfield Creep Event Recorded by PBO Strainmeter

Overview

The PBO Parkfield strainmeter network consists of 8 borehole tensor strainmeters. It spans the creeping section of the San Andreas Fault from north of the town of Parkfield to Chalome. This section of the San Andreas Fault produces abundant microseismicty and periodically produces moderate sized earthquakes. Between the moderate events, some of the accumulated strain is accommodated by small creep events.

On August 17, 2008, the strainmeter at Varian, B073, recorded such a creep event. It lasted an 1 hour and generated about 20 nanostrain of shear strain.
