Project Highlights 2003 - McCall Glacier
McCall Glacier 2003
- Principal Investigator (PI): Matt Nolan, University of Alaska, Fairbanks
- UNAVCO Engineer: Bjorn Johns
- Dates: May 2003-August 2003
- Location: McCall Glacier, Alaska
McCall Glacier in the northern Brooks Range is used as an index for glacier contributions of fresh water inputs into the Arctic Ocean. The primary efforts are directed towards mass balance and flow dynamics. Bjorn Johns supported the most intensive initial season of the project to establish a local network and re-survey previous mass-balance locations. Real-time kinematic (RTK) surveys were used along a transect measured 10 years earlier with an airborne laser survey to observe vertical change. RTK was also used to re-locate previous stake locations for velocity and mass-balance survey transects. Two Trimble 4000 receivers were left for the summer to capture temporal velocity variations.
