There were no major UNAVCO "events" in FY97 related to community proposals or major equipment purchases as characterized FY96. The emphasis from a management perspective was on meeting the priorities set by the UNAVCO Steering Committee in October of 1996 in response to the EAR-IF Panel review of the 1996 UNAVCO Facilities proposal. Appendix D provides progress on meeting these priorities in FY97 as well as management plans and priorities for FY98.
Based on feedback from the FY96 EAR-IF Panel review of UNAVCO, the UNAVCO Steering Committee met in February 1997 to map out a new strategy to promote GPS-based research. The results of this deliberation, entitled Proposal: The Development of a UNAVCO Science Office and Restructuring of the UNAVCO Coordination Process, are contained in Appendix E. This plan calls for a Science Coordinator to lead the UNAVCO Community in a strengthening of its science component through four science working groups for Natural Hazards, Global Change and Dynamics, Atmospherics, and Tectonics, through a Technology Working Group to deal with applications of new technology, and through an Infrastructure Coordinating Committee to oversee and coordinate the activities of the multiple UNAVCO Facilities. Plans in FY98 include seeking a candidate for Science Coordinator as well as multi-agency funding to support the Science Office and science working groups.
