-
Lake Clark National Park "Brown Bag" Presentation
-
General overview of the theory of plate tectonics and global positioning system. EarthScope projects, specifically the Plate Boundary Observaotry, is explained related plate tectonics and GPS. The focus of this presentation is the data and science in the Alaska region, specifically around the Kenai Peninsula and the Cook Inlet.
-
Homer, Alaska Educator's Meeting
-
A brief review of the PBO project and the many opportunities for educators and scientists to use our data for research and in their classrooms. Note - if you are using a PC, some of the pictures may not be visible.
-
Westside Elementary School
-
This presentation focuses on the Southern California region, specifically near El Centro. The audience was 2nd through 5th grade with several teachers from neighboring schools (i.e. McCabe Elementary School) and some parents. This presentation involved a lot of stopping to do student activities. After the powerpoint, the group went outside to the GPS monument for further explanations and questions. Please see pictures posted on DIMS, as well as on Facebook under the name "Sky Unavco"
-
San Diego State University, Brawley - Imperial Valley College
-
The audience was mainly college students, from intro geology students to geology majors. College faculty and administration, as well as local community members were present. The presentation was given in English with Spanish translation. This talk included information about the recent earthquakes in the region and about the earthquake early warning system for the Imperial Valley region.
-
Mesa Union School, California
-
This PowerPoint was used for the older students. There was another presentation used for the younger students, but it is similar to this one. The over audience was 2nd - 8th graders and their teachers. Two six grade classes had some more time to do hands-on activities, as well as go out to the GPS monument itself.
-
Lewis Center, Apple Valley, California
-
This talk is for a 9th and 10th grade audience at an advanced charter school. The presentation is made for about a two hour talk in which numerous hands-on activities are scattered throughout the talk. These students have already covered the theory of plate tectonics in their Earth Science class and are currently moving onto rock types and eventually earthquakes and volcanoes.
-
Potter Valley High School
-
Potter Valley, California is within an active tectonic setting. The 9th - 12th grade students learned about their local tectonics, the PBO project, and ways to follow through with a career in the sciences.
-
Leggett Valley School
-
These high school students and teachers were taught about the GPS monument on their property and why their school's location is important for the PBO project with its close proximity to the Mendocino Triple Junction. These students have more of a physics background, so the geophysical aspect was more of a target.
-
Loleta School
-
These 4th - 8th grade students completed several hands-on activities, as well as viewed this presentation to learn and review Earth Science and their local tectonic movement. The students also learned about potential geologic hazards and what to do in the event of each hazard.
-
Point Reyes National Seashore
-
Audience was interpretive park rangers who listened to the lecture and then held a discussion about PBO and local geology (handouts on these topics and how PBO data is being used was provided). This happened on the anniversary of the 1906 SF earthquake.
-
Yellowstone National Park
-
During the West District interpretive training, these interpreters and a few law enforcement and backcountry rangers were present to learn about the EarthScope project and UNAVCO. The audience learned about the EarthScope project within Yellowstone National Park, focusing on GPS data from three sites, strainmeter equipment, and LiDAR. The audience learned how to access the data and interpret it, as well as how to address possible questions about flight sounds and purpose of research.
-
Lava Beds National Monument
-
This was an evening ranger program to the general public staying in the park campground. The audience had an age range of five through the late seventies!
-
Lassen Volcanic National Park
-
During summer seasonal interpretive staff training, the rangers at Lassen Volcanic learned about the EarthScope project and then went outside to test their knowledge at a PBO GPS station. This group had a high amount of participation and questions as geology of the region was covered, as well as interpretive methods to cover science in the park.
