  • Report of the Eighth SNARF Workshop from San Francisco, California [2007 Dec 21]
The eighth SNARF workshop was held at the recent Fall AGU meeting. See the report for meeting minutes, technical presentations and posters.
  • GeoEarthScope LiDAR Data Release: Northern California [2007 Dec 5]
We are pleased to announce the public release of the first processed products from the GeoEarthScope Northern California Airborne LiDAR project! More data will be coming in the next few months, along with more advanced access and analysis tools. The data are currently available as 1 km^2 tiles of 0.5 m digital elevation models - both unfiltered (all data) and filtered (bare earth) - in ESRI (ArcGIS) binary grid format.
  • Notice of Opportunity & Request for Information: GeoEarthScope Airborne Laser Swath Mapping (Airborne LiDAR) Data Providers [2007 Nov 16]
UNAVCO has issued a Notice of Opportunity and Request for Information (RFI) to identify organizations capable of providing research quality airborne laser swath mapping (airborne LiDAR) data acquisition services to support upcoming GeoEarthScope projects.
  • Semi Annual UNAVCO Member Equipment Purchase Open from Nov 1, 2007 Through January, 2008 [2007 Nov 1]
UNAVCO members have the opportunity to pool orders for our best volume discounts on Trimble and Topcon equipment. Members intending to participate should notify the manufacturer's representatives listed in the link above as soon as possible. Please contact supportunavco.org with any related questions.
  • New UNAVCO President Announced [2007 Oct 12]
The Board of Directors and the external presidential search committee are glad to announce that Dr. M. Meghan Miller has accepted the position of President, UNAVCO, Inc., and will start her appointment on January 7, 2008..
  • Airborne LiDAR Imagery of Active Faults for GeoEarthScope [2007 Oct 10]
GeoEarthScope is a component of EarthScope that includes the acquisition of aerial and satellite imagery and geochronology. As part of GeoEarthScope, we are working on collecting LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data along major fault zones in the western U.S. and Alaska over the next year. This effort will provide extensive and detailed images of active faults throughout the tectonic plate boundary region on the west coast of North America. Airborne LiDAR is an unparalleled remote sensing technique for generating extremely detailed maps of ground elevation. Because of LiDAR's advantages over previous remote sensing techniques, it is rapidly becoming a key tool in studies of active faulting, landscape processes, and ground deformation.
  • Borehole Strainmeter and GPS permitting [2007 Sep 11]
During the month of August, PBO Permitting received 14 new BSM permits including permits for five sites in Yellowstone National Park. In addition, we are making progress on the Mendocino, Mojave, LA Basin, and East Bay Parks (San Francisco) strainmeter permits. These remaining clusters will include several alternate sites for each primary site so that there will be no interruption in drilling if a bad hole is encountered.
  • RESESS/SOARS Protégés to Give Final Presentations at Colloquium [2007 Aug 6]
After weeks of intense research and writing, SOARS and RESESS protégés will give their final presentations August 6 – 7, 2007 in the Foothills Lab 2 Main Seminar Room. With topics ranging from urban flooding to monsoon wind cycles, our protégés’ research embraces disciplines from across the geosciences. This year, protégés will also present posters on their research: Thursday, August 9th in the Center Green Auditorium at 3:00 pm. Please join us in recognizing our young scientists' hard work. • UNAVCO President Position Available [2007 Feb 14]
  • Summer Residence Programs for Master Teachers and Faculty [2007 Apr 3]
  • GeoEarthScope Geochronology Notice of Opportunity [PDF] [2007 Jan 18]
In order to meet the goals of the EarthScope project, funded by the National Science Foundation, UNAVCO, Inc. intends to issue a Request for Proposals to identify organizations capable of providing geochronology services in support of the GeoEarthScope component of EarthScope. UNAVCO invites organizations that are interested in this opportunity to submit a Statement of Interest in order to be considered for inclusion in the RFP proposer’s list. The deadline for Statements of Interest is 26 January 2007. Click here [PDF] for more information.

  • GPS Research in Iceland is Hot [2006 Aug 30]
Continuous GPS made the national news in Iceland this month after the Icelandic Center for Research (RANNIS) awarded funding for a significant expansion of continuous GPS networks in Iceland. The project titled "High-rate continuous GPS observations in Iceland" represents an international collaborative effort to construct a spatially dense high-rate continuously operating GPS network across the island of Iceland. more >>
  • USCS: GPS and Strainmeter Data [2006 June 12-16]
In response to community requests, UNAVCO has instituted a series of short courses to increase the capacity of our scientific community by using various data. These courses are aimed at current researchers who want to update their skills or branch into new areas of research, and younger scientists such as post doctoral fellows, graduate students, and upper level undergraduates. Classes will be held at the UNAVCO Headquarters in Boulder, Colorado, June 12-16, 2006.
