UNAVCO Community Mini-Proposals

The UNAVCO Board of Directors seeks broad input on specific initiatives that might contribute to Frontiers of Geophysics science and facilities over the coming decade.

On May 19, the UNAVCO Board announced the opportunity to propose frontier facility geodetic capabilities for the 2018 - 2028 National Geoscience Earth Observatory (NGEO) Facility. This announcement initially went to the US Academic members of the unav_all list service, and is now posted below or can be downloaded in PDF format. Mini-proposals are due June 17 to mini-proposals@postal.unavco.org. For questions, contact a UNAVCO Program Director or the President.

Due: June 17
Decision: July 8

The UNAVCO Board of Directors seeks broad input on specific initiatives that might contribute to Frontiers of Geophysics science and facilities over the coming decade. Request for Proposals: Up to 3-page mini-proposals to inform Frontiers geodesy activities to be proposed to the NGEO solicitation, either by UNAVCO or in a subaward or other collaborative relationship:

NSF also intends NGEO to provide a range of Frontier capabilities that will support experiments targeting future scientific goals (up to $9.0 million/year). Capabilities of interest include, but are not limited to, those that would provide support for cross-coastal Earth systems science; near-surface and critical zone geophysics; and atmospheric and cryosphere studies informed by geophysical methods. In addition, NGEO should provide enhanced capabilities to explore, develop, and apply next-generation and emerging instrumentation and methods to problems of community interest.

Mini proposals may include the following elements :

  • Summary abstract
  • Science rationale, linked to any of the guiding documents listed below
  • Proposed frontier facility capabilities needed to advance the science questions
  • Rationale for how the facility serves a multi-user geodesy and broader geophysical community
  • Proposed UNAVCO and any other institutional roles required for the success of the project
  • Community, outreach and education activities (or request for UNAVCO support)
  • Other broader impacts
  • Relevant figures, captions and references
  • The major budget elements required to support the proposed work, if known
  • Decisions on the subset of activities that will be included in the UNAVCO response to the NGEO solicitation will be made based on the total cost, diversity and impact of the scientific questions addressed by the suite of approaches, with an independent committee making the recommendation to the UNAVCO board. Wherever possible, the UNAVCO and IRIS boards will coordinate on proposed activities with clear overlap between the two communities.
