News
[December 2007] Geodesy has come a long way since Aristotle suggested the earth was a perfect sphere. Scientists have moved from debating the shape of the earth to techniques such as geodetic laser scanning (GLS), which produces surface maps at sub-meter to sub-centimeter resolution. Read about UNAVCO’s contribution to the detailed mapping of the northern San Andreas Fault using GLS, as well as a brief history of GLS, instrumentation, scientific results, and what to expect in the future in the Physics Today December 2007 article, Geodetic Laser Scanning on www.physicstoday.org. [24 December 2007] Moulins, or vertical shafts formed by surface water percolating through a glacier, could be a key factor in an ice sheet’s rapid response to climate change. Learn more in this recent NPR piece highlighting results of the UNAVCO supported Greenland Supraglacial Lakes project with PIs Sarah Das and Ian Joughlin. Richard Harris travels to Greenland to join the hunt for a mystery moulin in Greenland's Mysterious Holes Speed Ice Flow to Sea on www.npr.org [WEB]
