Gravity satellites provide estimates of land water storage variations by monitoring the time-variable component of Earth’s gravity field. These data are used in models to partition water among the various storage mechanisms which control the distribution and use of water – snow, canopy water, soil, rivers, and lakes, etc. These measurements and models, in turn, place the water distribution in the context of seasonal variations and hydrologic extremes due to climate change. |
