NOTE: Our Data Policy governs data archiving and access at UNAVCO.
The following guidelines are recommended for attributing community contributed data sets.
UNAVCO archives data sets that have been collected by many community investigators funded by a variety of sources. The data user bears sole responsibility for recognizing the role of the data provider through co-authorship, citation, sponsor acknowledgement, and/or attribution, as appropriate and consistent with professional standards and sponsor requirements.
Professional standards for co-authorship, citation, or acknowledgment are established by professional organizations (e.g., AGU, GSA , and references therein). Some publishers provide for formal referencing of unpublished data sets held in national archives such as UNAVCO’s (e.g., Policy on Referencing Data in and Archiving Data for AGU Publications). In addition, for unpublished data, NSF requires acknowledgment of the originating grant following the format stipulated by the NSF Grant Proposal Guide.
Data provider contact information accompanies archive holdings. The easiest way to obtain this information is to send a request to archive@unavco.org (see this FAQ for additional guidance). Data users typically must contact the data provider to obtain current publication and award citation information.
To reference data sets collected by UNAVCO, such as Plate Boundary Observatory or Africa Array, visit our Acknowledgement page.
