Field Trip: A Reanalysis of Structural Features in Proterozoic basement of the eastern Colorado Mineral Belt: the Secret of the Ductile and Brittle Deformation Features led by Dr. Jonathan Caine, USGS – 1:00pm to 5:00pm

Join Dr. Jonathan Caine of the USGS on a guided trip in the Boulder-Golden area on the intriguing structural history of the eastern Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. Deformation features, plutons, hydrothermal alteration zones, and mineral deposits in this region have traditionally been thought to have been created during a reactivation of Proterozoic structures. However, structural analysis of ductile and brittle deformation features shows that the principal structure is not a zone of crustal scale displacement. There is little evidence for co-location or co-orientation between the ductile Idaho Springs-Ralston shear zone and younger, major brittle fault zones. It appears that the brittle structures that controlled mineral deposit permeability were directly tied to the shallow Laramide stress field, hydrothermal fluid flow, and progressive strain localization. Preliminary ages for clay minerals formed in association with major brittle structures show no evidence of Proterozoic ancestry but do suggest a protracted period of brittle deformation during the Laramide.

Come along and learn about the:
    1. structural history of the eastern Front Range of the Colorado Rockies,
    2. characteristics, kinematics, orientations, and age of ductile and brittle structures and how they may or may not related to one another and mineral deposit permeability; and
    3. characteristics, localization, and evolution of the metal and non-metal-bering hydrothermal systems in the eastern Colorado Mineral Belt.

The Field Trip fee is $20 per seat.  Please indicate if you are interested on the Registration form.

Buses will load outside of the main entrance of the Millennium Hotel at 1:00pm and will return at approximately 5:00pm.

Tour of the UNAVCO Facilities – 1:00pm to 3:30pm

This tour is concurrent with the Front Range Field Trip. This tour will highlight the engineering, equipment and data archive facilities and infrastructure in the UNAVCO Boulder office. Please indicate if you are interested on the Registration form. Concurrently there will be Hands-on Terrestrial Laser Scanning demonstrations in the UNAVCO Classroom (description below). There is not a fee associated with this Tour.

Buses will load outside of the main entrance of the Millennium Hotel at 1:00pm and will return at approximately 3:30pm.

Hands-on Demonstration of UNAVCO's New Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) Instruments

This session will allow participants to get a hands-on look at UNAVCO's TLS instruments including an introduction to scanner operation and data collection. Four TLS instruments are currently part of the UNAVCO instrument pool: 1) Riegl LMS-Z620, 2) Riegl VZ-400, 3) Leica ScanStation C10, and 4) Optech ILRIS 3D. Each scanner has unique capabilities with regard to imaging resolution, range, data collection rate and other attributes. This session is a unique opportunity to see these different instruments side by side in one place and will be of interest to experienced users and new users alike.
