2005-2006 Mt. Augustine Eruption Studied with high-rate GPS Data
April 18, 2008
High-rate GPS data from the UNAVCO Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO) network, installed in collaboration with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, were analyzed by a group of geophysicists and volcanologists under the lead of Mario Mattia (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Catania, Italy) in order to study in detail the deformation and unrest preceding a major eruption of Mt. Augustine volcano (Mattia et al., 2008).

GGN Station Install, Falkland Islands
August 26, 2008
NASA-JPL provides support for the GPS infrastructure through a network of permanent GPS stations called the Global GPS Network (GGN). The UNAVCO Facility supports the operation and maintenance of the permanent stations that make up the NASA-GGN. In order to increase the coverage of the GGN network, a new station (FALK) was added in Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, a United Kingdom territory. The islands are located about 500 km off the eastern tip of South America in the South Atlantic Ocean and this new GPS station location fills a previous gap in the GGN-GNSS network.

Unimak Island Installations, Alaska
August 12, 2008
The second phase of a three-phased installation of thirteen PBO GPS sites on Unimak Island, the largest and easternmost island in the Aleutian Island chain of Alaska, is underway. The first phase involved preparation work for installing the sites, based out of Cold Bay. During the second phase, the crews are installing seven of the western sites. The final phase is when the crews will install the remaining stations. Unimak Island is home to Mount Shishaldin, an active volcano that last erupted in 1999. The PBO instrumentation will aid in the study of this active yet remote location.

Boy Scouts of America use UNAVCO GPS Technology for Sustainability, New Mexico
July 22, 2008
The Philmont Scout Ranch, a place Boy Scouts go to embark on backpacking expeditions into the high country of the New Mexican Rockies, employs a conservation staff to ensure the integrity of the pristine wilderness. A large part of sustainability is keeping track of trail and campsite usage using GPS technology, including one of UNAVCO’s permanent stations on the ranch, and relocating or building new ones as necessary. With around 22,000 Boy Scout groups tramping off into the ~136,500 acres that make up the Philmont Ranch every year, maintaining accurate maps of the backcountry is no easy task.

UNAVCO's Short Course Series Covered LiDAR, Strainmeter, and InSAR with More to Come!
June 20, 2008
UNAVCO offered a series of well-attended short courses on processing and using various data, including LiDAR, strainmeter and tiltmeter, and InSAR. The UNAVCO Short Course Series is aimed at current researchers and younger scientists interested in an introduction to a new research tool. In these three courses, UNAVCO and EarthScope funds supported 24 students. The last short course of 2008 will be in September on GPS data analysis.
